The City of Bryan was established in 1859
and incorporated in 1871. The Downtown
area was a busy center of activity as Bryan
grew, due mainly to agriculture and the
railroad (1876). A few miles south of
town, the Agricultural and Mechanical College
of Texas (Texas A&M) was established in
1876 and the City of College Station was
incorporated in 1938.
Two landmarks of downtown are the Carnegie
Center and the LaSalle Hotel. The
Carnegie Center was built in 1903 with a grant
from the Andrew Carnegies Library
Foundation. It was restored and
rededicated as the Carnegie Center of Brazos
Valley History in July 19999. The LaSalle
Hotel was built in 1928. It was
conveniently located near the railroad and the
railroad and the business center of town.
The restoration and reopening of this luxury
hotel in September of 1999 is a source of pride
for the historic downtown area.
Many other buildings have been restored or
renovated over the years. Innovative
renovation projects are underway right
now. The City of Bryan continues to
implement its Downtown Master Plan as Phase II
construction on Bryan Avenue will provide 4
blocks of new streetscape.
